According to my best open world games, you truly have the freedom to do anything and everything. This, in part, requires game developers to have open-ended gameplay mechanics, which gives players a choice to play a game the way they choose to. The sense of freedom while playing the game is extraordinary. I have ranked my favorite open world games below. It considers freedom of doing things in the game, story, quests, and side quests, characters, soundtrack, and graphics.
Red Dead Redemption 2
What can be better than roaming around in a massive best open world games as a cowboy with realistic game mechanics? Like always, Rockstar Games didn’t fail to surprise.
Witcher 3
Wild Hunt: Witcher series is my absolute favorite. Everything from graphics, the soundtrack to the story and characters are on point. The gameplay is also fun. I actually enjoyed grinding more exp and doing all the side quests.
Skyrim
Skyrim is a game that I have finished three times. The graphics are old for today’s standards. Skyrim Special Edition improves the textures and lighting by many, and graphics mods take the game to a whole new level.
The Legend of Zelda
Breath of the Wild: An amazing game with an amazing story and gameplay mechanics. BotW is addictive. It’s a bummer that it’s not on PC, so you need to emulate it unless you have the supported console.
Far Cry 5/3
FarCry games are made for the players to experience nature at its best. F5 shifted a little to the urban side but has natural environments still.
Grand Theft Auto 5
GTA series as a whole is a pinnacle of open-world gaming. GTA 5 took a huge leap from its predecessors with multiple playable characters and multiple endings, and it’s amazing.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Assassin’s Creed games were the most popular stealth games back in the day until they became way too repetitive. With Odyssey, the AC series took a different path by giving the player the freedom to play it like an RPG game.
Minecraft
A game that takes sandbox games to a whole new level. In Minecraft, you can go anywhere you want, build anything you like, like literally. Redstone in Minecraft can be programmed like boolean gates in electronics. Some people have made a cellphone in Minecraft which can do video calls to the real world. Some people have made a whole Minecraft game inside Minecraft.
Sleeping Dogs
One of the most underrated games of all time! Sleeping dogs has a masterpiece story, amazing characters, and a beautiful open world in China.
Just Cause 4/3
Just Cause games are known for great horizontal and vertical freedom of mobility and destruction capabilities. This action-packed game is filled with stunts and explosive points everywhere.
Forza Horizon 4/3
It a game that single-handedly killed all the other racing games. Forza Horizon offers unrivaled graphics and environments along with an open world.
Fallout 4/3/New Vegas
Fallout world feels a little dead compared to Skyrim world, even though both are by Bethesda. This is centered around guns instead of swords, magic, and bow like Skyrim.
Batman
Arkham Knight/City: Roam around fighting evil in a bat costume in Arkham. What else can you ask for?
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
This game is known for its realistic fighting mechanics. It’s a new RPG game worth checking out.
No Man’s Sky
This list cannot end without mentioning the world’s biggest open-world game, though procedurally generated—a game with over 18 quintillion planets to visit, but still, nothing much to do. Hello, Games are constantly pushing out new updates to add new features to the game, and it is improving.
The list is in no particular order. All of them are best open world games, and I’d recommend playing any of them.
